Back in October, I had an itch to shoot something creative and just for me. That often happens as all the stress and craziness from wedding season starts to wind down and I’m able to just shoot something more relaxed. As much as I looove photographing weddings, engagements and boudoir– I have to say, I think my absolute favorite has got to be shooting a good portrait session. And I’m not talking formal, stiff portraits that involve a lot of professional studio lighting and perfect-postured posing. My passion is being able to capture someone in a more natural, stripped down and real way. Simple styling, a timeless setting, and pure natural light. This particular fall evening was amazingly warm and the sunset light was just gorgeous. Speaking of gorgeous– my model was someone whose look inspires me to no end. I call her my “muse” because I could seriously photograph her every day. She’s a total chameleon, and the best part? She’s not an actual model– just a regular girl who happens to be as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
I’d love to do a lot more of these editorial portrait sessions and plan on adding it to my line up of types of sessions offered. I think every woman should have some beautiful pictures of herself to capture and freeze a moment of time in her life. Not only in a wedding gown, or pregnant with a belly, or in lingerie for a boudoir shoot– but just as she is: whether it’s beautiful, strong, poised, happy, complicated…
Renee’s dress and jewelry all came straight from my own closet. I wanted her outfit to be simple & timeless but still pretty and a bit sexy. And she’s actually a very talented professional makeup artist so she did her own hair and makeup (inspired by some pictures I sent her). I knew I wanted dark smokey eyes using neutral colors and a barely-there nude lip. For her hair, I wanted big loose curls that could be messed up and imperfect to give her a bit of an edge.
The best sunsets are in the fall! And on this night, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect warm, yummy sunset.
Thanks to the super gorgeous and always accommodating Renee! I know this won’t be the last time I ask you to get in front of my lens, so I hope you’re up for being photographed many more times in the future! You’re the best girl crush ever! 🙂
