ali | styled editorial shoot

You know that old saying:  “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray”?  Well, that was definitely playing through my head on repeat the night of this crazy– and I mean CRAZY shoot!  The plans were all set– I had so many elaborate ideas, but as fate would have it, even a ton of planning and hard work couldn’t keep Mother Nature from coming along with her own plans.

It all started when I felt the urge to feed my creative soul– this happens every once in a while.  I get this urge to just shoot something totally for myself and style the whole thing from ideas that are floating around in my overly cluttered head.  So, I announced our very first open model search on our Facebook page, and found the lovely Ali.  We had a concept already planned out when we chose her, but then she mentioned in passing that she had a horse.  With that, we ended up changing the whole concept and instead based it completely around Ali and her beautiful horse Cahlua!  It’s always been a dream of mine to do a shoot with a horse –and what was even better about this was that it wasn’t just a model with some random horse, but a beautiful girl with a horse that she loves and has a special bond with.  Collaborating with me on this was Sunita Sumaru who always does such an incredible job helping me see my vision to life with her amazing hair & makeup talents.

On our one hour drive out to a private farm, the weather went from bad to worse, and by the time we were actually ready to shoot, it felt like we were in the middle of a hurricane!  If you could see the behind the scenes of this shoot (OH how I WISH we had some behind the scenes shots, but it was just sooo crazy)  you’d see our poor model freeeeezing her tushie off, you’d see Sunita trying to tame Ali’s hair as it fell out of it’s gorgeous updo and just whipped all over the place, you’d see Cahlua being so spooked by all the wind and jerking around everywhere,  and you’d see me desperately trying to direct and get ANY usable shots we could amidst all the chaos.  After only about 20 minutes, we pulled the plug and I went home deflated, thinking I’d be lucky if I had even ONE usable shot in the bunch.  Luckily, I was thrilled to find a handful of shots that I absolutely loved.  And I just have to give mad props to Ali who totally delivered the goods.  This girl is not a professional model, but the way she killed it that night, she very well could’ve been!    I’m so happy to be able to give her these special portraits of her with her beloved horse.

OK, enough back story– here now is the final set we got from this styled shoot.  A shoot that will always hold a very special place in my memory and heart~

Special thanks to the amazing people that made this shoot possible:

adrienne | edmonton portrait photographer

Yesterday I shot the most beautiful portraits of the lovely Adrienne.  I can’t wait to share more from her shoot but for now, couldn’t resist posting these teasers~

renae & jan: married | edmonton wedding photographer

Renae & Jan were our last wedding of 2012 and  Cheryl’s last wedding as my official second shooter!  It was a bittersweet day for sure– so much beauty, love and joy typical of a perfect wedding day and being able to work with my best friend doing something that we both love… but definitely mixed with a bit of sadness too as this part of our journey together comes to an end.  I don’t think we’ll completely shut the book on anything though– who knows, if a wedding comes along and the timing is right– we may just see a Kat & Cheryl reunion in the future.  Never say never 🙂

What a great wedding to sign off on though!  Renae & Jan got married at Fort Edmonton Park and it was the first time we’d ever shot there.  Let me tell you, it was amazing!!  It was like stepping back in time with so much inspiration everywhere for a photographer!  The location suited them so perfectly and with all of their beautiful rustic, vintage details– everything just came together so amazingly.  I’m so glad we were able to capture their vision for them to cherish forever.  Here’s some of my favorites from their day~

We all then headed off to the Hotel Selkirk which was in Fort Edmonton Park.  Renae & Jan each had their own rooms to get ready in and it was within walking distance from the church.  All in all, the getting ready part of their morning was very peaceful, relaxing and wonderful!

Doesn’t Renae have the most captivating eyes?  So beautiful!

This wedding party was such a blast!  Totally up for anything and had me and Cheryl in stitches most of the time 🙂

As I already mentioned, there was so much inspiration here!  We literally could’ve shot there all day.  One of my favorites was when we headed over the the carnival– and because it was a pretty stormy, cloudy day, the place was practically deserted.  And I know this may sound strange, but there was just something about it being deserted that gave it a feel I just loved!!  You know me… I love clouds, wind and gloominess!  It just adds an element of romance that isn’t so expected.

Well it looks like our 5 year lucky streak is now over!  Cheryl and I have been lucky enough to have NEVER been rained out on a wedding day… until now!!  I know you can’t tell in these pictures, but it had started to rain.  Just seconds before this shot below was taken, Cheryl was holding an umbrella over their heads!  We quickly shot a few and then ran into an old log cabin for shelter until the rain passed.  It was absolutely crazy and I have to give Renae & Jan MAJOR props– because they were like rockstars!  We all ran around like crazy people in the rain and managed to get some amazing shots and  have a great time while doing so!  My kind of clients 🙂

We probably never would’ve gone into this dark log cabin had it not been raining… just another lesson to go with the flow and not get frazzled by circumstances!  Turns out, these are some of my favorite shots from the whole day!

And luckily after only about 10-15 minutes of heavy rain, it eased up and we were able to keep going.  Gotta love a happy ending!!

We then headed back to the Hotel Selkirk which was where they had their beautiful and intimate reception.  Such a perfect venue for anyone looking for a nice, vintage-feeling reception location– I loved it!  And Renae & Jan did such an amazing job with all the details– like this gorgeous desert table.  So much eye candy for my camera 🙂

Renae & Jan~  Thank you so much for being such amazing troopers throughout the whole day.  After everything we went through with the rain and your ability to just rise to any occasion, I can tell that you’lllikely approach your future life together in the same way.  We hope these pictures capture the love and emotion of your special day– you absolutely deserve it!

sarah & mark: married | edmonton wedding photographer

OK so I would like to start out by saying that this very well could be the longest blog post in the history of blog posts.  haha!  I tried and tried to cut it down, but thanks to this very talented and detail-oriented bride, there was just so much amazingness to share with you all.  Oh, and not to mention, this couple is also so beautiful to look at, that pretty much every other picture we took was a favorite!  sigh.  OK–  disclaimer over 😉

Sarah and I go way back.  Back to my old days of working as a makeup artist and back when she still lived in Edmonton.  She’s now living in Calgary, but when she got engaged and asked me to be her wedding photographer, I was so flattered and excited.  I typically don’t take on destination weddings simply because I have 2 little kiddos and getting a second shooter can be a bit tricky.  But for Sarah, I just knew I couldn’t pass it up so I made a weekend trip out of it and brought my family along!  And luckily, it worked out and Cheryl could make it too.

When I first saw how Sarah & Mark were together, I just knew she had found a good one.  Mark is warm, down to earth, humble, and more than anything else– so incredibly  loving towards Sarah.  When I shot their super sweet engagement session this summer (with the tree swing), I could see how crazy in love they were with each other and it was inspiring. (See Part 1 and Part 2) There wedding day was no different, and I was so happy to be a part of such an incredible love-filled day.  Here’s a few (OK– a LOT) of my favorites from their day~

Sarah got this cute dress hanger and these pretty clutches for her bridesmaids from Etsy.  Her amazing dress and beaded sash are Lazaro.

I loved this!!  Sarah & Mark opted to do a “First Look” before the ceremony.  This is always such a treat because I love when the couple gets to share this special little moment without so many eyes on them.  They have time to really take it all in.  I loved this romantic little overgrown garden/fountain location too–so pretty and private!  This series of pictures tells such a great story~

Their color scheme was so pretty!  I’m always a huge fan of bridesmaids dresses in different cuts and shades.  Really reflects each bridemaid’s  own look and personality and gives the photos so much more depth and richness.

Now I know they’re obviously gorgeous— but Sarah & Mark are also two of the kindest, sweetest people you’ll ever meet.  And their love for each other was so palpable with every snuggle and kiss– it was really such a pleasure to be around 😉

Then it was off to their room at the elegant and stunning Fairmont Palliser so they could freshen up a little before the ceremony.  Of course, we snapped a few pictures too because it was so beautiful 🙂

Finally, it was time!  We headed to Bonterra Trattoria Restaurant in downtown Calgary which was to be the site of both the intimate ceremony and reception.  The ceremony took place on their beautiful outdoor courtyard patio, and then cocktails and dinner followed immediately after inside the restaurant which they had all to themselves.  It was rustic Italian romance at it’s best.

Inside, Sarah did an amazing job with the decor.  Her inner Martha Stewart shined and she left no detail untouched.  It was beautiful, charming, and totally romantic.  I was so happy to see her vision come to life and Bonterra Restaurant truly was the perfect setting.  I felt like we were in Italy!

Perhaps my favorite touch of all was how she made the restaurant wall a gallery of her engagement photos!  Such a great idea and it totally added that personal touch to the space.

We absolutely love when we’re able to steal the couple away for a few minutes during sunset.  It’s one of those special treats for a photographer because it’s known as the “golden hour” –when the sun is super warm and buttery and oh-so-romantic!  Sarah & Mark were more than willing to sneak away for a bit during dinner and I’m so glad they did because these are some of my favorite shots from the whole day and they were taken in about 10 minutes just outside the restaurant.

I typically don’t blog pictures of food but being that this was an amazing restaurant that’s known for their delicious Italian food– I couldn’t resist!  Cheryl actually said it was the best food she’s ever had at any wedding we’ve shot!  I just might have to agree with her 😉  Check them out if you’re ever in Calgary!

After the perfect dinner and some tear-inducing speeches, everyone headed back out to the courtyard for Sarah & Mark’s first dance.  It was another magical moment to top off many magical moments throughout their amazing day.

Sarah & Mark~   Cheryl and I had such an incredible time with you, your bridal party, friends and family, and we were made to feel like a part of the family ourselves.   You’re two very special people who are perfect compliments to each other and I love you both!  Your wedding was perfect and we were so happy to be a part of it.
